Ops Plan: EJ Dome

August 30, 2007

You put your Ops Plan together when you need to organize and formalize all the ideas and divergent scenarios relating to your objective.  In this case, the objective is pretty straight forward:

(Lord help us if we break out the all-orange unis again…)

Sub-objectives include beer, food, parking, child-management, comms plan, and overnight arrangements.  We’ve met most of these but are still awaiting a few vital pieces of intel before the Ops Plan can be certified… Read the rest of this entry ?

Review: Planet Hulk

August 27, 2007

…by Greg Pak (words), Carlo Pagulayan (pencils) and others, Chris Sotomayor with Laura Martin & Lovern Kindzierski (colors).

The Hulk has always been a personal fave. He smashes. The madder he gets, the stronger he gets. He wishes the puny humans would just leave him alone. And, of course, he used to refer to himself in the third person, which was always outstanding.

Growing up, I liked him for just those attributes, and the fact that he was the strongest one there is. He was always kind of getting the shaft from the other Marvel characters and from his alter ego, Bruce Banner. They would manipulate, cajole, and generally disrespect him, and then effect surprise or outrage when the Hulk decided to smash them. Read the rest of this entry ?

Review: Telegraph Days

August 24, 2007

…by Larry McMurtry.

Most folks will have heard of McMurtry for either Lonesome Dove (Pulitizer Prize, kick-ass miniseries) or as co-screenwriter of Brokeback Mountain. He’s written many, many books set in the American West, and if you’ve never read him, well, that’s a shame. Telegraph Days is part comedy/part historic rumination on the romance and myth making of the Old West. It’s heroine/narrator, Nellie Courtwright, is a tough and clever forward-thinking woman who ain’t afraid to kiss a man, take advantage of his insecurities, or put him in his place. Bear in the North Woods

August 21, 2007

We saw good friends married in the mouth of a giant musky. We saw (and heard) lumberjacks tenderly serenade the newlyweds. We saw a lot of waterslides, trees, and log-themed buildings.

And we saw a bear.

Because what trip to northern Wisconsin is truly complete without a bear sighting? Read the rest of this entry ?

Harry Potter, Part the Seventh

August 16, 2007

Finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows a few weeks ago and have been biding time and reflecting before posting a review and commentary.

At one point a couple of weekends back, while staying at my Mom’s house, we had three copies of the book out for three people (for the wife, my sister, and me). The fourth copy, my Mom’s, was on the road with her. So JK did well by the Beems. This is something I love about Harry Potter and will truly miss: The excitement. The anticipation. Kids and adults in deep conversations about books… Folks at work saw me reading over lunch, and we talked about Harry–folks I wouldn’t necessarily have pegged as readers.

A cultural phenomenon tied to reading books. Hasn’t it been grand? In a time of ever diminishing attention spans and cheaper faster interactive media, HP has provided hope (and $$$) to book people. Let’s hope it wasn’t an anomaly.

Comments on The Deathly Hallows after the bump. Be forewarned, the rest of this post assumes you’ve read the book and are for some reason interested in what I have to say. Mega-spoilers abound. Read the rest of this entry ?

Dog Days Football News

August 14, 2007

A busy week of soccer, while my attentions have been focused elsewhere. First and foremost we have this:

I am sorely tempted to make the trip, truly I am. The USA-Brazil match is a late replacement for the friendly that was supposed to be in Mexico City. My opinion: the Mexico match would be better preparation for upcoming World Cup Qualifiers, but I’d rather watch Brazil. Both teams should be near full strength, so we’ll see. Back from the Con

August 13, 2007

Back from Wiz World Chicago, and feeling positive about stuff. That’s what these kinds of trips are about. You get out there and talk to folks, to artists, editors, other writers, etc. and it gives you the recharge. If it didn’t have that effect, I’d be worried.

Some highlights included listening to Paul Jenkins and the brief conversation thereafter. That guy is flat inspiring, and some of what he said will, I think, help me with one of the compositional problems I’ve been struggling with lately. Also, brief exchanges with guys from Dark Horse, Top Cow, and Vertigo–I got our book into their hands and didn’t feel desperate or harried. Maybe they’ll look it at and get back to us, maybe not, but at least they have the goods. Read the rest of this entry ?

VofC Con Propaganda

August 9, 2007

Where can you find Vault of Cthulhu at Wizard World Chicago? Where you ask?

Behold, the crappy animation! We’re in Artists’ Alley. It’s not as cool as Diagon Alley, but then what really is? Nick and Zac will set up this evening, and I’ll arrive tomorrow. Stop by!

VofC – Page Creation

August 8, 2007

This comes from our Vault of Cthulhu #0 Preview issue – available at Wizard World Chicago this weekend. It provides a glimpse of what goes into creating a single comics page. (Click on the image, and click on ‘full size’ to get the full effect.)

Pretty cool, eh?
