50 days until the start of the World Cup. That means about three weeks until Coach Bob Bradley names his 23-man roster. So we have limited opportunities to pick our own version of the roster, which must start with strike force options…
Yes, Herculez Gomez has 10 goals and sits atop the Mexican Football League goal-scoring list for the season, while Edson Buddle has 7 goals in the L.A. Galaxy’s first four games. It’s certainly the right time to get hot – especially with the well-documented (and much maligned) lack of forward options for the National Team. Read more about it. Both these guys dedicated their off-seasons to improving, and both are relative veterans in their prime who’ve shown flashes before. I say bring ’em both!
This month’s version of the 23 will also feature the 7 players who make up the list of alternates. With the current list of injuries and history as our guide (at least one or two alternates have gone to the last two Cups), those other seven better be ready…
New additions in italics; *=Beemsville Starting Eleven.
Goalkeepers (3): Tim Howard*, Marcus Hahnemann, Brad Guzan
Sidebar: Big Marcus passes Guzan on the depth chart based on his run of starts for Wolves. Still, if Timmy should go down with a late injury, I’m on the phone to Brad Friedel…
Defenders (8): Oguchi Onyewu*, Carlos Bocanegra*, Jonathan Spector*, Steve Cherundolo*, Jay DeMerit, Jonathan Bornstein, Edgar Castillo, Clarence Goodson
Thoughts: Gooch still hasn’t played since the fall and remains a concern. I still like Edgar Castillo, though he hasn’t gotten much of a look.
Midfielders (8): Landon Donovan*, Michael Bradley*, Stuart Holden*, Maurice Edu*, Jose Francisco Torres, Benny Feilhaber, Ricardo Clark, DaMarcus Beasley
We sez: Run DMB can’t seem to get a club game for Rangers, but he looked pretty sharp against the Dutch and this group could use another veteran. Too bad Jermaine Jones has never fully healed.
Forwards (4): Jozy Altidore*, Clint Dempsey*, Herculez Gomez, Edson Buddle
And so: The two hot kids are on the plane. Everyone is hoping for Charlie Davies (me too, of course) but until we hear of him participating in full training and at least a reserve game, I can’t include him.
The Provisional Seven: These guys could easily make the cut and may yet see South Africa… Charlie Davies (F), Alejandro Bedoya (M), Heath Pearce (D), Nick Rimando (G), Chad Marshall (D), Robbie Rogers (M), Brian Ching (F).
In a couple of weeks Coach Stoneface will let us know the real 23, but I could go to battle with these guys.
