23 For Brazil – May

Next week Jurgen Klinsmann will name the 30 man Camp Cali roster, from which (presumably) the final 23 will emerge.  That makes this the final ’23 for Brazil’ post before the World Cup.  We are just over a month before that opening game against Ghana in Natal, so get your vacation days requested and your viewing plans made.

Some of the guys are scoring goals and playing well lately (Dempsey, Boyd, Besler, Wondo); some guys are not.  Fortunately, (knock on digi-wood) the team is pretty healthy at this point.  Big questions remain about the defense and the last few forward-line spots, with only the midfield looking solid.

So we bring you the final Beemsville 23:  Our picks (not who we think Jurgen will take) to the World Cup.  As a bonus, we’ll also include the other seven guys we’d invite to our training camp.  Kind of beside the point since we’re naming the roster, but here we go…

Goalkeepers (3):  Tim Howard (Everton), Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake).   Locked in for months.

Defenders (7): Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Matt Besler (Kansas City), Omar Gonzalez (L.A. Galaxy), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Timothy Chandler (FC Nurenburg), DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Jay DeMerit (Vancouver) . DeMerit’s not in Jurgen’s plans, so the most likely replacement here is Clarence Goodson.  Chandler gets our nod over Brad Evans.

Midfielders (7): Michael Bradley (Toronto), Jermaine Jones (Besiktas), Graham Zusi (Kansas City), Landon Donovan (L.A. Galaxy), Mix Diskerud (Rosenburg), Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes), Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake).   This group’s been pretty solidly set for months now.  Barring injuries, you can expect each of these guys to see the field in Brazil.

Forwards (6): Jozy Altidore (Sunderland), Clint Dempsey (Seattle), Aron Johannsson (AZ Alkmaar), Eddie Johnson (D.C. United), Juan Agudelo (FC Utrecht), Terrence Boyd (Rapid Vienna), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose).  Agudelo is the last man in after EJ’s poor start to the MLS campaign sees him dropped.  We could also see young Julian Green grabbing that last spot.

Seven other Campers:  Seven more players will train with the team in California, looking for the 11th hour push or injury replacement.  Here are ours:  Clarence Goodson (D), Michael Parkhurst (D), Tim Ream (D), Brad Evans (D-M), Maurice Edu (M), Eddie Johnson (F), Julian Green (M-F).

Starters against Ghana (June 16)

We’re sticking with the diamond midfield – at least to come out firing against Ghana.
